We have so much information available to us about Feng Shui that thankfully got passed down over thousands and thousands of years of study from ancient sages. At one time, thousands of years ago the information of Feng Shui was a guarded study that only high officials could access. With all this wealth of knowledge, we need a way to understand the basics of information. In this article, we will discuss the bagua; a simpler way to read energy in our space.
You may at times see websites, especially some Feng Shui shops display a nine grid formula. The below photo is an example of a bagua used by many websites to display the map of yearly energies present in every space throughout the year. The numbers in the example bagua are the current period we live.
Every period lasts twenty years. These are the energies that represent the nature of the Earth realm energies. There are three levels of energies: (1) Heaven, (2) Earth, and (3) Mankind. The Heaven energies represent perfection or most auspicious of configurations. We look to the Heaven energies to understand the overall condition of our present energies or where we would like energies to be here on Earth. Earth energies of course are set on Earth and are subject to the rotation of the planet as well as the seasons (due to the elements of the stars…more on this in another article).
Mankind (I believe our pets too!) also have energies, so as we move and as the Earth and seasons change, so do these numbers. The period we are currently living stays the same for twenty years where another number (star) takes the center palace and thought to be most auspicious at that time. Twenty years for each number relates to the general luck of an entire household and based on the complete rotation of the big dipper.
Each twenty year cycle groups into three groups of the upper, middle, and lower cycles which denote their own characteristics (too deep for this basic article). At the end of 2023, the period 8 we currently live will end bringing in the last period of the lower cycle of an 180 cycle that will start over around 2045. A good bit of information to know in order to predict the future of energy or knowing how auspicious or inauspicious a number (star) based on the center position of the current period.
For example, the #2 star in period 8 is thought to be inauspicious since the star has a negative influence during this period. However, the #4 star is on its way to becoming inauspicious as times progresses, but it will return to be auspicious when it lands in the center of the chart which will be around the beginning of the middle cycle of all the periods (maybe too much information right now).
Each year, we will see numbers in the bagua shift and the reason we pay attention to the bagua so we know what areas of our space offer uplifting energy and areas that we need to be aware. Below, you will find 2020’s bagua map of energies for the year. Each number in the square represents a star energy that has unique qualities.
For example, the black earth #2 star is in a declining state and considered inauspicious. Because the #2 is declining in state, we can expect the energy where the #2 influences to present problems, especially related to illness that can effect women more than men since the #2 translates from the Kun triagram (more on this in another post).
When we know the star alignment for the year, such as the diagram above – we align the North sector (#3 star for 2020) with our entry way to our home or office. In this way, we will be able to know what energies in the bagua influence certain sectors (areas) of our space. Also known as the Black Hat Sect school of thought, we can use the bagua to map out certain areas of life that correspond with certain sectors of our space when we align the north sector of the bagua with our entry door.
Flying Star Compass – Lou Pan
Feng Shui consultants around the world use a Loupan or a type of compass that depicts the different energies in various cardinal directions to derive a more accurate idea of a home or office unique energy map and mouth of Qi. Loupan compass’s can tell us precisely about a particular place or particular room at a particular time.
The lou pan allows us to take an accurate reading of the entry way of our home or office based on cardinal direction which reveals the certain characteristics of that space. For example, your home or office may face 312 degrees on the compass which relates to a specific type of Qi that enters your space.
Remember how I mention there are basics way to explain the shift of energy for every space for the year? For a general idea of the energy of our space each year we only need to refer to the annual bagua. So, we do not need to refer to the loupan. Both Xuan Kong and Black Hat Sect are effective ways to derive a reading of the energy of our space. Although this may seem confusing, many people are happy with using the bagua to depict the annual energies.
Further, certain paths exist for the shifting stars each year. We call this flying the stars. If we know how to fly the stars, we can know for certain the energies that will land in certain areas of our space for the year. We must not take this lightly. Flying the stars when doing a Feng Shui audit of our space means we are determining the facing and sitting direction in order to determine mountain and water star charts. Not to be confused with flying the stars generally for the annual star chart bagua.
A Feng Shui specialist has this knowledge and can do an audit of our space when the yearly energies do not tell us enough about certain aspects or problems we are experiencing in our life. But, for a general idea of the energy affecting every space everywhere each year we only need to refer to the Bagua.
